The Ultimate Test of Strength and Agility – A Masterclass in the Massive 141cm Eight Trigram Broadsword.

The Eight Trigram Broadsword (Baguadao) is a signature weapon of the Cheng Style system, renowned for its imposing size and the immense physical demand it places on the practitioner. Measuring 141cm in length and weighing approximately 7 catties (approx. 3.5kg/7.7lbs), it is considered one of the most challenging weapons to master. Led by the legendary Master Sun Zhijun, this 55-minute masterclass (DW207-05) teaches you how to wield this heavy blade with the same fluidity as the empty-hand palm.

Key Challenges and Techniques of the Eight Trigram Broadsword:

  • The Rule of Unity: Master the core principle: "The broadsword goes with the man, the man changes with the movement of the broadsword, and the man and the sword unite together."

  • Advanced Body Mechanics: Learn how to use the centrifugal force of this heavy weapon to enhance your Eight Trigram Body Skills and Step Skills. The blade’s weight acts as a powerful training tool for core stability.

  • Mastery of the "Broadsword Way": Master Sun Zhijun meticulously breaks down the specific "paths" or orbits of the blade, ensuring that every swing is precise, balanced, and tactically sound.

  • Internal Power Output: Understand how to drive a 7-catty weapon using internal Qi and waist power rather than just arm strength, preventing fatigue and maximizing striking impact.

  • Comprehensive Integration: Learn to combine individual moves into a continuous, overall practice that embodies the "Swimming Body" philosophy—unpredictable, circular, and unstoppable.

  • Q: Why is the Eight Trigram Broadsword (Baguadao) so large and heavy?

    • A: Traditional Baguadao is oversized to develop extraordinary core strength and to facilitate large, sweeping defensive perimeters. As Master Sun Zhijun explains, the weight requires the practitioner to rely on perfect Eight Trigram footwork rather than raw muscular force.

  • Q: Is this DVD suitable for someone who hasn't practiced the Palm?

    • A: This is an advanced weapon. Master Sun Zhijun notes that it "needs the basic training of Eight Trigram Palm." We recommend studying the Basic Training (DW207-01) alongside this DVD to ensure proper structural alignment.

  • Q: Does the 141cm length make it difficult to handle indoors?

    • A: While it requires space, the training focuses on circular orbits close to the body. This DVD is the perfect guide to learning how to manage that length through correct "Man-Sword" coordination.
